  • Wimbledon FC manager Bobby Gould for a column in the club programme

'Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, all I hope perfonally this afternoon is that we don't have an "after the Lord Mayor's Show" game situation! After the game against Everton where all 12 players that were used battled, it looks as though my quotes after the game have given us a new title - the team with the "Bulldog Spirit". This spirit that I feel is shown by people when they have their backs to the wall. The people of the media would like to see "perfect football" but anybody who can ever describe what "perfect football" is to me will be one super-human person, because football, in my opinion, is all about opinions and this Football Club has built up its own reputation and no matter - and I state, no matter - how much criticism we receive in the media for the way we play the game at Wimbledon I, as manager, will never submit to the pressures of the media.

'For professional footballers the past 4 days since their last game has been an important period because, as I am sure you can appreciate, the heat that we played in against Watford and the humidity against Everton is a situation where the players do sweat - at least I hope they do! - and their preperation for today's game would have been of a professional idealogy because as a Manager I must make sure that their recovery period makes them as fit as possible as they go out to face Oxford today and that they have no lethargic apprehensions either mentally or physically because they are at the end of the day - believe it or believe it not - they are only human beings, but also professionals and Don Howe and myself would have made sure that the preperation for today's match is one that nobody can turn around and say the preperation for this game is not right.'
